Dismantling Tyranny Transitioning Beyond Totalitarian Regimes is an edited collection in the case study of seven formerly communist-ruled countries and how they resolved the dismantling of their respective secret police organizations. Each country profiled had a unique experience e.g., Russia's experience was a cosmetic transition the Czech Republic model of political screening (de jure lustration) and Estonia's model of absolute screening (de facto lustration) and Nicaragua's complete replacement of one loyal totalitarian system with another.

Gleichschaltung - The German word Gleichschaltung (literally "synchronising", synchronization) is used in a political sense to describe the process by which the Nazi regime successively established a system of totalitarian control over the individual, and tight coordination over all aspects of society and commerce. Another possible translation is "making equal".
